Melbourne Museums
A day at the Melbourne Museum will delight adults and children of all ages. As far as museums in Melbourne go, this is the largest.
In fact, it's the largest museum not only in Australia, but in the southern hemisphere. It is also home to a massive blue whale skeleton and indoor forest display.
Most of the exhibits are unique to Melbourne, Victoria and offer both an educational experience and a fun day out. In particular, kids will love getting up-close to live insects, cockroaches and giant spiders. Prepare to be amazed by Phar Lap, one of the world's most legendary race horses and a popular Melbourne attraction.
A separate, permanent exhibition for kids aged 3-8 is the Children's Gallery's '1, 2, 3 Grow' display. Visitors are allowed and encouraged to touch displays. This exhibit uses multimedia and interactive areas to take children on a journey through the lifecycle of plants, animals and humans. Young ones will get a real understanding of how their own bodies grow in comparison to the rest of the living world.
An easy way to see the best of the museum is to join a Museum Melbourne highlight tour. The tours are free to join, once you've entered the museum.
You'll find the museum in the Melbourne Museums Complex at 11 Nicholson Street, Carlton. It's surrounded by the beautiful Carlton Gardens of Victoria.
After your day at the museum, be sure to take a stroll through the gardens and let the kids burn some energy on the award winning playground.
